Unity

I have been busy, busy writing sermons and working on Christmas presents and family time and just living.  Sometimes, I think I get too caught up online, here on my blog or on my Facebook page and forget to live, so I've really been working on living lately.  :)  So... I've neglected this blog.  Today, I decided to share with you the sermon from last week.  It was laity Sunday and the theme was Unity.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Unity.  To me, unity means togetherness.  Unity brings us all together to act as one.  So basically, we’re all in this together and yet when we look around sometimes we see anything but unity.  We don’t see a lot unity in our government right now, we don’t see a lot of unity in The Church anymore.  Our communities have struggled a lot as well lately.  In our society today we hear a lot of arguing and fighting.  Just open up your facebook newsfeed and scroll through and you’ll see all kinds of us vs. them posts continually.  Or if you aren’t on Facebook, turn on the news and listen to the news shows.  It’s republican vs. democrat, it’s liberal vs. conservative, it’s young vs. old, it’s faith vs. faith, it’s I’m right and you’re wrong and there is no in between. For quite a few years now, if someone has a different opinion than ours we turn away from them.  If someone is different from us in looks or beliefs we push them away.  If we don’t like something about someone we often close our ears to them.  Sadly, we even see this disunity in families sometimes because of differing beliefs, political or religious, or different life styles.
I’ve always loved the TV show NCIS.  It stands for Naval Criminal Investigative Service.  For some reason, several years ago, we stopped watching it.  Most likely because life got busy on us but recently, I’ve stated watching again on Netflix.  I watched an episode recently where a young marine was murdered as he was praying in a park.  Fairly quickly we discover that he was Muslim.  He had recently converted.  As they begin to look more closely at his life, they discover that his father was a chaplain, a Christian chaplain, in the military and that was fairly recent too.  As they interviewed different people in the young Marine’s life they discover that he was having some issues in his unit and in his family due to his new faith.  Eventually, we discover that his younger brother is the one who killed him because his faith was an embarrassment to his family and the Marine Corps.  His father was horrified.  I imagine that he was wishing that he hadn’t let this come between their relationship and he lost him before they could reconcile.
Unity. I looked it up in the dictionary, just because, well, that’s what I do, and one of the definitions said, “a condition of harmony.”  Doesn’t that sound nice?  Harmony.  When I think I of harmony, I think of music and the thing about harmony in music, is that it’s several different notes coming together to make one beautiful sound.  So, thinking about unity in the same way, unity would be the different coming together to make something beautiful.  To be in unity would be to live together in harmony.  That doesn’t mean we all need to change and be alike, it means we can come together in all our differences and work together, in this case in ministry.  We all work together in ministry to the world.  We all work together on the mission that Christ set before us and it also happens to be the mission of the United Methodist Church as well, to go and make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.   That’s our ministry.
Now, you may be thinking that ministry is not your calling.  You are a lawyer, or a real estate agent, or a soldier, or a teacher or a mother, or secretary or a builder, a clerk, a mechanic and the list goes on and on.  And you are right we aren’t all called to pastor a church!  We have to have other vocations in order for society to work but we are all called to ministry.  Ministry isn’t just preaching, or leading Bible studies, or planning worship services or going to foreign countries to be a missionary and so on.  Ministry happens in our every day lives.  My daddy used to always tell us that our best witness was the way we lived our lives.
In our reading from Mark today, there is some talk about who can be next to Jesus, who would sit next to him in his kingdom, which we can kind of translate as who will be second or who will be great but Jesus tells them again that they should give up their selfishness, that they should stop worrying about who will be “great” and learn to serve others.  To serve, to be a servant.  Jesus taught this not only in word but also in actions.  He was a servant to all, to everyone.  Not just to those who liked him, who thought like him, who believed like him, no he was servant to everyone and by this, through this he made many disciples. Disciples who then were to go out and be in ministry too.
Here’s kind of a funny thing.  We are talking about serving people, about serving everyone no matter who they are or what they believe, or what they look like.  We like to focus on that, on who we serve and that’s a BIG thing, but this is a good time to also focus on who are ministers and who we minister WITH as well.
First, we have to recognize that all the ministry of the church cannot be done by just one person or even just a few people.  It takes all of us!
I remember sitting in a committee meeting here several years ago and someone saying something about how when they go to certain meetings it’s always the same people at all the meetings, that there aren’t a lot of different people and that this was a struggle.  They talked about how they wished that more people got involved at which point someone asked, “Well, have asked anyone new to help?”  And I remember there was this moment of pause.
See, something I think that often happens in organizations, is that we get used to the same people doing everything.  We get used to always asking the same people to do things and forget to invite others into working with us in ministry.  On the flip side of this, I think often we sit around waiting to be asked to serve, to be asked to take part.  We wait for an invitation when we really we need to be stepping out and letting our talents be known and offering to use them in ministry.  It’s a tricky line.  The leaders in the church don’t want to push people away by pushing them into serving and then the people don’t want to seem vain, or full of themselves, or are afraid of stepping on some else’s toes.  The thing is, there is ministry enough for everyone both inside and outside the church.  There is!
You may be thinking you don’t have time to serve on a committee or sing in the choir, or help with the noodle luncheon.  That’s ok!  You can be in ministry right where you are!  Have you noticed the person a few desks, or cubicles or whatever down from you who seems to be stressed or unhappy, or just cranky?  Or maybe it’s the cashier at the store, or even a stranger in the hall or on the street.  Maybe you could be the person who offers them a smile and a friendly word or two.  That’s a huge ministry these days, one that is sometimes very neglected.  We all get caught up in our own little space and forget to look out and see who might be in need right in front of us.
Maybe you have a neighbor who could use a visit every now and then.  We have several people in our own congregation who would love to have someone to come and visit with them from time to time.  Or if you can’t get out they would love to receive a phone call that just says, “Hey, I was thinking about you!”
There are so many places both inside and outside the church for many hands to be in ministry together.  Together in unity, even when we don’t always see eye to eye, even we if don’t always agree on everything, we can and should be in ministry together.
We can’t rely on the pastor, the secretary, the education director, the music director, the youth director and so on to do all the ministry of the church alone.  We are all in this together.  We are all called to be in ministry as one body, reaching out to all those in need how ever we are able.
We can be in ministry with the church down the street or with the synagogue, or mosque, or temple.  When we had the string of church fires several months ago, I read an article about a Muslim community raising money to help them rebuild.  I know of a Lutheran Church that is shares it’s building with a United Methodist church whose building is no longer standing.  I know of another Methodist church that has opened it’s doors to a Jewish community that was in need of a place to worship.  I’ve watched this congregation join with other denominations to be in ministry together to this community.
If we all come together, there will be more that can be done to work towards our mission of making the world a better place, of shining God’s light throughout and in making disciples of Christ.  All of us together can do so much more than just one of us alone.
Oh My... Life, Living Life
I've been trying to be much more intentional about living.  It's easy to get caught up on Facebook, or the internet or games or whatever and to forget to actually get out there and live!  So I've been really working on this.
I've been out walking more with my family and sometimes with friends.
I've been cooking meals more and better, not just something thrown together, but really delicious meals.
I've been crocheting more  and trying to make time for games with the family.
I've been working around the house doing things I've been putting off for no good reason.
And well, I've just been out trying to live more.
It's funny, I hate housework.  I really do.  Come to my home and you'll notice it.  LOL  Really!  But this weekend, we moved some furniture around and cleaned some rooms and added things and took things out and I have to tell you.  It was a lot of hard work and I loved every minute of it!  I even found myself wanting, really wanting to clean the bathrooms!
Who said that??  I know it's crazy but it true.  As I was on my hands and knees scrubbing the bathroom floor Saturday, my husband came in and said, "Wow, this isn't exactly how I thought we'd be spending our anniversary!"
I laughed and said, "I know, but as crazy as it sounds, I'm having fun!"
It made me think of the verse from Colossians that says, "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, not for men".  I laughed as the verse ran through my mind.  I laughed first of all because I thought it was weird that as I was cleaning the bathroom, that a bible verse ran through my mind, and then second, I laughed because I thought it must be for God, because I have never been happy cleaning the bathroom before!
I can't put in the words the feeling I was experiencing, but yes, I did feel joyous and I was heartily working for the Lord, even in the bathroom.
Whatever we do in life, we should be doing heartily, let say that word again, heartily for the Lord.  It brings joy, real JOY and who doesn't want to feel joy every day?
Joy!
"But I do not count my life of any value to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the good news of God’s grace." ~
Acts 20:24New Revised Standard Version (NRSV)
What a beautiful day!  I woke up happy and have managed to stay happy!
It started with a lovely walk with my favorite girl.  I love walks with her.  I get to learn so much about her and from her!  She is wise beyond her years and is just so much fun to be with!  The wind was blowing and oh how I love the wind.  I love to spread out my arms wide, shut my eyes, and just let the wind blow over me.  I tried to get a photo of the wind blowing through the trees today but well, as you can imagine, it didn't work.  But I love the wind so much.  As I was enjoying it today, and proclaiming the joy it was bringing to me, to my daughter, I couldn't help but think of the Holy Spirit and how it can blow over us, around us and us through us.  Maybe that's why I love the wind so much.  Who knows.
Then we got ready and went to preschool!  Yes, we went back to preschool, this time as music leaders!  It was so fun.  It's Christian Pre-
school and they asked us to teach the kids some Bible songs and then at Christmas we will do some singing at their Christmas program.  We had so much fun!  It was new and one of the classes forgot to come but they will be there next week!  The kids were just precious and oh, how I've missed sharing my love of music with little ones.  We sang, we danced, we moved, we laughed, we learned.  It was fun and I'm looking forward to next week.
This is how I feel my day was, all ages in ministry together
After lunch, I went to visit an octogenarian couple from church.  What a lovely visit we had!  We laughed, we shared stories, we shared pictures, we listened to each other, we just shared these moments in time with one another.  We shared ourselves.  I left feeling alive and loved.
I started out my day thinking I was going to get to be in ministry today and yet, I feel more like I've been ministered to!  What a full and wonderful day and it's not even over yet!  It's definitely been a day full of love and giggles and music.  It's what every day should be filled with.  A day filled with joy, pure, unbridled joy.  My face hurts from smiling so much!
Unplugged... again
I know I've said this before but this time I mean it!  I'm sticking to it!  I promise!
A friend, last week, said something about the busyness of cell phones and tablets and it made realize and really notice that I have slowly started spending too much time with mine again!
I had really been enjoying being unplugged more so I, right that very moment, put down my iPad and enjoyed life right where I was, which happened to be sitting at the breakfast table with DD as she ate before heading off to class.  I was surprised that I had it!  That instead of being fully present in our time together, I was only half listening while scrolling through Facebook.  What was wrong with me!  I'm so glad that post by a friend caught my attention.
I've been doing that, enjoying life where I am, ever since.  I've picked up my crocheting again and love having more time for it!.  I'm even caught up on laundry!
And the most important thing?  My devotion is happening first thing!  I's not rushed and I feel so much better, more centered and ready for the day.  I feel much more connected ~ to God, to myself and to my family.  It's amazing to me how being a little less connected to the cyber world can make me feel so much more connected to the actual world around me.
Timing is EVERYTHING
Peace, time, music, and wisdom... my gratitude list today.
Peace~
This morning, after everyone had left the house, I went out to the backyard to water the yard a bit.  It was so quiet and peaceful.  The hissing of the water coming from the hose, and the sun glinting off the drops of water on the leaves of the plants was soothing to me.
Time~
It seems like such a precious commodity these days.  I know that my long days filled with my children are numbered.  They are growing up and starting their own lives.  I'm so excited to see where life takes them but I want to cherish every minute I have with them.  Time is precious.  My daughter and I have been always been close.  I love that even now as she is a teenager, she enjoys spending time with me.  We go for walks several times a day and just talk.  She shares her hopes and dreams with me, she shares her life with me and this time with her is perfect.
In fact, as I was typing this my son called to tell me
about his first day of his senior year of college classes.  I stopped everything, shut my computer so that I could just enjoy this time with him and listen to his stories of today that led to stories from the summer while he was gone which led to his dreams of his future!
Time is precious and I'm working at enjoying every minute of it.
Music~
I love music.  I always have.  I wake up with a song in my heart every morning and it will play most of the day in my head.  I'm lucky in that my kids have my love of music and they love to play their instruments.  I get to daily listen to my daughter practice the piano.  It's some of my favorite time of the day.
Wisdom~
You're going to laugh at this one but sometimes I find great wisdom on social media.  I know that sounds crazy but it's true.  Sometimes it's in a blogpost from a friend or an article someone shares and every once in a while it's in that meme that goes viral (every once in a great while...).  Sometimes that wisdom comes at the perfect time, just when I need it most and when that happens, I am so very grateful for it.  Timing is sometimes, everything.
~~~

And then there is this...

Can you see it?  I think some else has been using my brush!  I mean really!  When exactly did this happen???  Those are grey hairs, yes, there is more than one, on MY brush!!  Ok, so I've had a few grays in my head for a while but I do NOT remember seeing them on my brush before!!  There's that time again... my how fast it goes...

It All Adds Up

Short daily walks that add up ~~ friends being there when you need them ~~ cooler days giving me a glimpse of the fall that is soon to come

I'm so grateful for all these.
~~~
I've stepped up my walking game a bit lately.  I've not sped up in my walking or even added distance to my walks really.  I've just added more walking.  I've been trying to go for a walk morning, afternoon and evening.  Just strolls really, though every once in a while I have to remind myself of that, thay are just around my neighborhood usually.  Sometimes I throw in a longer one but usually not. I've been amazed at how they have added up in steps and mileage. I had two 8 mile days in a row!  Yes, I, me, simply Sherri, walked 8 miles in a day, two days in a row.  I've had a total of 3 of these days ever!  After, the second one, I decided I wanted to try to do it at least once a week.  I never dreamed I'd do it the next day!  I wasn't even trying!  I'm really enjoying these walks, not only are they good for my body, they are good for my soul.
"Arise, walk about the land through its length and breadth; for I will give it to you."  ~ Genesis 13:17
~~~
I often see on social media some kind of meme or quote about friends.  They say something about how true or real friends are the ones you don't talk to for a long time but are there for you when you need them. I have mixed feelings about that.  I think it's important for friends to spend time together but in this busy world of ours, maybe that's just not possible.  I have a good friend, a neighbor really, who I don't talk to or see enough but when one of us needs the other, we are always there.  It's so nice and refreshing to be able to call on a friend when you need one.  I'm so grateful to have a friend like that.

"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up.  But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!"  ~ Ecclesiastes 4:9-10

~~~
This weather has been perfect for all my walking.  If it was warmer, I don't know that I could it! I've been enjoying time out on the patio more because of the cooler temperatures too.   I have always loved fall.  The cooler temperatures, the leaves changing, wearing sweaters, fires in the fire bowl, soup and chili, home baked bread.  I can't wait for this next change of season.  Actually, I love all four seasons though, I'm noticing as I get older, I like the heat of summer less and less and I find myself wishing for a little shorter winter sometimes too, but I do love the different seasons.  They all have their place.  I've always wanted to live somewhere that has all four seasons and I do now.  I do have to say though that Autumn is my favorite.  What's your favorite season?
Prayers
This is my work space this afternoon.  I'm working on a new project and the cool weather outside, called me to come out and work here.  Isn't it lovely?  I had to stop and clip a few roses to enjoy.
This is my favorite kind of weather, nice and cool with a slight breeze. Ahhh... it's just perfect, and a perfect setting to work on my new project.  I'm excited to get started.  I've been toying with this one in my mind for over a month now and I'm ready to get going on it.
Question for you, do you pray before you start a new project, or work, or just whatever it is you do?  I always pray as I write a sermon.  I usually pray as I sit down to get started on it.  If I don't I quickly realize it because I struggle.  I often pray when I'm starting new crochet project and pray all through it for whoever might receive it.  I've been praying over this project for a while now, for God to guide me in it and to it and through it.  All prayers are welcome!  Just sayin'.  ;o)
